Welcome to Home Helpers

Hello, my name is Kay Jurica. After spending my whole life growing up in Manteno, Illinois, I noticed that many families needed help with elderly parents, in order to enable them to remain SAFELY in their homes as they grew older. I did my research to find a service that could help these families by providing caring, well-trained, trustworthy companions and I opened Home Helpers in March 2009, providing Senior Care and Recuperative Care in our community.

With my background as a respiratory therapist and experience working with patients and families at Christ Hospital, Provena St. Mary's Hospital and Riverside Medical Center over the past 20 years, I can assure you that you and your loved ones will receive excellent care and companionship with Home Helpers. I believe in caring for clients as if I were caring for members of my own family. My caregivers are carefully chosen to meet the specific needs of my clients.

Let me tell you about some of the clients we have already been able to help. Mrs. M. was a very independent woman in her 60's who siffered a stroke, leading to some weakness on one side of her body. She did well on a rehabilitation unit and was discharged home to be with her husband. However, because of his medical problems, he was not able to meet all of her needs while she continued to recuperate at home. We were able to provide her with a caregiver for six hours three times a week, to help with dressing, bathing, preparing meals, companionship and errands, including a weekly trip to the hairdresser! Mrs. M. continued to improve with outpatient therapy and has become almost completely independent. After six weeks, we reduced our help to one day per week for six hours, and Mrs. M and her husband could not be happier.

If your family needs this kind of assistance, then call me at 815-468-1791 or email me at kjurica@homehelpers.cc

Mrs. P. was a very independent, but somewhat frail woman, who lived in an independent living community that consists of several homes managed by a local hospital. Mrs. P. was doing well, but due to arthritis, she was not able to do her own ironing, and she prefered freshly ironed clothing to using a dry cleaner. We were able to place one of our care givers in her home once each week to serve as a companion, to do light housework and to do her weekly ironing. Now Mrs. P. is very happy that she has someone to talk to and her clothing is alway freshly ironed when she gets dressed in the morning.

Many of our families' primary concern is SAFETY. Many elderly persons find that they can maintain most of their daily needs, but because of poor vision, failing hearing or mild memory problems, safety issues arise, such as:

  • forgeting to take medications
  • forgeting to lock doors and windows at night
  • leaving the stove on
  • potentially slipping and falling in the bathtub
  • driving in inclement weather
  • not eating a balanced diet

By having a trained, insured, care giver, many elderly persons are able to remain in their homes, for months and possibly years, before facing the need to move into an assisted living or nursing home.

We are serving clients in the following communities:

  • Bradley
  • Bourbonnais
  • Kankakee
  • Momence
  • Manteno
  • Hersher
  • Wilmington
  • and other surrounding communities

If you or a family member need help remaining safely at home, call me at 815-468-1791 and I will personally come and perform a free in-home consultation to help you determine whether Home Helpers can help you.

If you call now, we will also provide a FREE Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) for any client who receives at least 15 hours of service per week. By combining the use of our daily services, the personal emergency response system, and family members, we can work together to keep your frail parent or grandparent safe at home, all at a reasonable cost.

Why our in-home services are so good:

  • Locally owned and operated
  • Licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health
  • Caregivers trained, background checked, bonded and insured
  • Services very flexible, cancelled at any time
  • Caregivers speak English well
  • Transportation available for doctor visits, shopping, hair dresser, etc.
  • Agency Manager (Kay Jurica) available 24/7

If you are facing these issues with a parent or grandparent:

  • forgetting to take medications
  • leaving stove or oven on
  • unable to walk without assistance due to poor balance or weakness
  • unable to drive and get to necessary appointments safely
  • needs someone to talk to
  • needs help getting dressed and fed in the morning or getting ready for bed

then you need Home Helpers.

Helpful Information Minimize

Review the 10 Caregiving Considerations below and determine if it might be time for you to get more involved and help a loved one address challenges they may be facing.

1. MEDICAL CONDITION – Has your loved one been diagnosed with a disease, illness or other medical condition that could impact their daily living? How is the medical condition likely to cause limitations to a person’s abilities now or in the future?

2. DRIVING - If your loved one drives, is there reason to believe they pose an above average risk for being involved in an accident? How are their reflexes, vision and ability to respond in an unexpected situation? Are they likely to get lost and panic?

3. FOOD/NUTRITION – Is your loved one eating balanced meals? Is their weight stable? Are they able to prepare meals? Are they able to manage grocery shopping? Do they have a reasonable variety of food in the refrigerator (with future expiration dates)?

4. HYGIENE - How does your loved one look and smell - including their breath? Does it appear they are bathing regularly? How are their overall appearance, grooming and ability to match clothing compared to prior years? Do their bed linens and bath towels appear clean? Are they able to manage the laundry?

5. BEHAVIOR – Does your loved one seem anxious or irritable? Does being away from home make them uncomfortable? Do they seem depressed? Are they inconsistent in the things they say? Does your loved one remember names, places and current events?

6. DAILY TASKS - Are basic tasks overly challenging, frustrating or time consuming for your loved one? (example: getting ready to go out, preparing a meal or shopping.)

7. MEDICATION - Can your loved one manage their medications properly including dosage, frequency and changes to prescriptions? Do they understand why they are taking the
medications? Are prescriptions getting refilled in a timely fashion?

8. FINANCES – Does it appear that your loved one is capable of making sound financial decisions? Are they able to manage their personal finances? Are bills being paid in a timely fashion? Do they have a reasonable amount of cash on hand?

9. MAIL - Is the mail stacking up? Do you see any past due or delinquency notices? Does your loved one appear to be a target for solicitation offers?

10. SAFETY – Is your loved one careful about turning off appliances (example: stove, coffee pot)? Do they ever carelessly leave candles or cigarettes burning? Are sharp objects properly put away? Do they keep the doors and windows locked – and are they able to locate the keys?

New Home Helpers Licensed by Kathryn Jurica - Sunday, August 30, 2009

Kathryn (Kay) Jurica began her new Home Helpers franchise in November 2008. She spent the first few months getting things ready and applying for a license as a Home Services Agency through the Illinois Department of Public Health. Obtaining a license through the State of Illinois ensures that care givers are properly screened, trained and insured, that appropriate contracts are used when obtaining new clients, and that all applicable regulations are followed with respect to record-keeping and provision of services. Kay's local Home Helpers received its license in March 2009.

Since that time she and her care givers have provided companionship, supervision, light housekeeping and transportation to several local clients. They (and their families) have been very pleased to be able to get assistance with activities of daily living while being able to remain safely at home.
